Cars in the UK are assigned an insurance group by the Association of British Insurers. These insurance group numbers, which range from 1 to 20, are then used by insurers as a basis to calculating premiums - the cost of insuring that vehicle.
Factors that are taken into account when calculating insurance premiums include :- car insurance group, who will drive, where the car is kept, the uses to which it is put and the type of cover required.
The higher the insurance group number is, the higher the risk is to the insurers, so the premiums will typically be higher. An example of a car in insurance group 1 is the Citroen C2 LX. Cars in insurance group 20 include the Aston Martin Vanquish and the Ferrari 360 Modena.
You can find the insurance groups given to many UK cars on this site. To start, select the make of the car on this page.
